PowerfulSignal

So, I’ve been playing with this very cool mobile router for about a week, and I’m totally in love with it. It’s smaller than the regular router wired into our Uverse connection, and in most of the house the signal is actually stronger, which is pretty impressive when you consider that the signal is coming from a two-year-old wifi card. Thankfully, I’ve got an unlimited data plan on the card (it must cost a fortune to use cellular routers without such a plan), so I can use it forever without killing my cell phone bill, but I do have to be careful because the card tends to run hot. It ran hot in my laptop, as well, so I suspect it’s just the nature of cell cards.

While I have to admit that I’m not entirely new to the concept of cellular routers, I am seriously impressed by how easy this was to set up (plug in card, plug in power, load software that I didn’t even need to muck with because it came pre-configured), and how compact it is.

Also, Kevin at PowerfulSignal.com is the nicest guy ever, and really patient when it comes to answering questions, especially from people like me who know just enough to be dangerous.

When Fuzzy gets home from Hong Kong, he’ll be playing with it as well, and we’ll eventually be posting a full review here in my blog.

Stay tuned.

‘Twas Grillig

on Jul24 2007

Apologies to Lewis Carroll for stealing, and then changing, the first two words of “Jabberwocky,” but I couldn’t help it. I’m excited, you see, because Fuzzy and I just bought a George Foreman grill.

I like to broil or grill meat, more than anything, but we didn’t bring our big gas grill with us when we moved here almost three years ago, and we’ve never managed to replace it. Partly, this is because we keep meaning to redesign the deck in our back yard, and I have fantasies about building a brick grill out there and attaching it to the gas line (we have an outdoor gas spigot - is spigot the right word)?

But it’s the height of summer, and I hate using the stove to broil meat, and I’m trying to eat healthier so I dragged Fuzzy to Target the other night, and I bought the George Foreman thing for a whopping $29.99. (I also bought a $10 pink digital watch since both my Fossil watches are too sparkly for every day, and one has a dead battery, but that isn’t really important right now.)

We tried it the night we bought it - I grilled salmon fillets - and I was most pleased.

Tonight, I’m making hamburgers, which, typically, I don’t do well when attempting using the frying pan. Grilling is easier.

Off with her head!

It shouldn’t be surprising that this toy was featured by Dave Barry last year. After all, he’s always been one to know about the edgy, the subversive, the just plain disturbing. (And I swear I’m not making that up.)

It also shouldn’t be surprising that I first heard of this toy, not from Mr. Barry’s column, but from my friend The Fabulous Klae, who is just as much in the know as any Miami humorist, and also makes amazing cappuccino. (He does Improv, is on the hot-button of the Funny, and makes espresso drinks. *Swoon*)

What is surprising is that I, who have never really been a doll person, since purging my house of Barbie dolls at the age of ten, and who really doesn’t need any more small cluttery items that might be tempting to chew-happy dogs, am intrigued by this doll. I think it could be an excellent stress reducer, for one thing. Or even a bizarre kind of weapon. (”But Mooooom, she shot a HEAD at me.”)

You can order the very fine Marie Antoinette Action Figure here.
